Tottenham player ratings vs PSG: Spurs denied at the death! Cristian Romero & Pape Sarr see hard work undone by late capitulation as Champions League winners claim UEFA Super Cup

Thomas Frank’s side surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose on penalties to the Champions League winners in European football’s curtain-raiser

Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to beat Tottenham on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday evening in Italy, as Spurs surrendered a two-goal lead late in the game.

The Premier League side opened the scoring on 38 minutes as a free-kick was whipped into the box and Lucas Chevalier, on his debut for PSG, first made a superb save from Joao Palhinha by tipping his effort onto the crossbar, before Micky van de Ven pounced to score the rebound.

Almost immediately after the restart, another free-kick was sent into the area by Pedro Porro, and it found Cristian Romero completely unmarked at the back post, and his header slipped through the fingers of Chevalier. Given that he has been signed as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s replacement, an error such as this may have set a few alarm bells ringing on the PSG bench.

On 65 minutes, the French giants thought they had a goal back when Bradley Barcola beat Guglielmo Vicario from close range after the Italian had made an excellent save from Desire Doue, but VAR correctly ruled the goal out for offside.

However, with just six minutes to go, Tottenham began to capitulate as Kang-in Lee pulled a goal back with a superb strike from the edge of the box. And PSG were level in injury time thanks to Goncalo Ramos’ superb headed finish from Ousmane Dembele’s exceptional, whipped cross.

With the scores level at 2-2, the game went straight to penalties. While Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur scored, Micky van de Ven saw his spot-kick saved and Mathys Tel missed altogether as PSG won the shootout 4-3, as Nuno Mendes converted the decisive kick.
