Actress Mamta Kulkarni has returned to India after 25 years. Mamta was a popular actress in the 90s, known for successful Hindi films such as Ram Lakhan, Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Andolan and Baazi, among others. Mamta Kulkarni announced her return to India via an Instagram video, leaving everyone surprised. However, this left fans wondering if the actress had returned due to the re-release of Karan Arjun.
However, Mamta Kulkarni exclusively told CNN-News18 that her return has nothing to do with films. In fact, she is in India to witness the Kumbh Mela and has no plans of an acting comeback. “I was outside India for 25 years, I was searching for myself. Now, Kumbh Mela is about to happen, so I have come here but I am not going to go back to the film industry. I am happy with my life. Nor have I come to India for Bigg Boss. When I left India in 2000, I was a top actor in the film industry, I had 43 film offers. I left all this and now I don’t want to come back to films,” she said.
Previously, Mamta announced her return to India through a video. She said, “Hi guys, this is Mamata Kulkarni, and I just came to India, Bombay, Mumbai, Amchi, Mumbai after 25 years.” She expressed nostalgia and added, “I went out of India in the year 2000 and exactly in 2024, I’m here and I’m really overwhelmed; I don’t know how to express it. I’m emotional. When the flight landed or before the flight landed, I was seeing on my left and right. I saw my country from the top after 24 years and I became emotional. I had tears in my eyes. I kept my foot outside the International Mumbai Airport and again I became extremely overwhelmed.”
Fans speculated that Mamta had returned to India because Karan Arjun was recently re-released in theatres and received immense love from the audience. The film revolves around the story of the two titular brothers who seek revenge from their greedy uncle for murdering their father but are killed by him and are reincarnated to complete the revenge. The film was headlined by Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Mamta was paired opposite Salman in the film. It also starred Kajol in a key role. The 1995 film was re-released in cinemas on November 22.
Why Did Mamta Kulkarni Leave India?
As for why Mamta Kulkarni left India, her departure was linked to a major drug controversy in 2016. The Thane Police reportedly named the actress as one of the accused involved in supplying ephedrine for illicit manufacture of methamphetamine to a Rs 2000 crore international drug racket and gangster, intended for trafficking. In 2024, the Bombay High Court dismissed the accusations against her, claiming lack of evidence.
