After the success of Tillu Square, Siddhu Jonnalagadda is back with his new film Jack. Directed by Bhaskar, the film features Vaishnavi Chaitanya as the female lead and has music composed by BVSN Prasad. Read our review to find out whether the film lives up to the hype.
Story:
Jack is a highly skilled individual who doesn’t believe in working a full-time job. His only goal is to become a RAW agent. He attends an interview and believes he’s secured the position. Meanwhile, he sets off on a mission to capture terrorists. At the same time, RAW agents are trying to apprehend a dreaded terrorist and prevent a massive attack on the nation. The rest of the story revolves around how Jack becomes part of the RAW team and helps foil the terror plot.
Plus Points:
One of the biggest strengths of the film is undoubtedly Siddhu Jonnalagadda. Without him, Jack would have fallen flat. He keeps the audience engaged, even when the storyline feels outdated. His dialogue delivery, comic timing, and screen presence carry the film from start to finish.
Prakash Raj is decent in his role, though it’s poorly written. The comedy in the first half works to an extent, especially the scenes between Siddhu and his father, played by Naresh.
The chase sequences and terrorist scenes set in Charminar are handled well. Even the mistaken kidnapping sequence is executed effectively. The idea of a local guy aspiring to join RAW is also established convincingly.
Minus Points:
Jack has an interesting premise, but its execution is disappointing. The film lacks seriousness, especially in the second half. While the first half offers comedy and thrills that somewhat land, the second half falls apart.
The RAW agents are portrayed as incompetent, and the entire operation relies solely on Siddhu’s character, sidelining others like Prakash Raj. Several logical flaws surface, making the plot hard to digest. Depending on a rookie like Siddhu to handle a national-level crisis is one of the film’s biggest flaws.
Vaishnavi Chaitanya’s character feels forced into the story through a weak detective subplot, and sadly, she doesn’t fit the role. There is no chemistry between the lead pair, and the Nepal operation along with the terrorist angle comes across as exaggerated and unconvincing.
Despite all this, Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s performance remains the only saving grace. Without him, Jack would have been a complete disaster.
Technical Aspects:
The production values are pretty good. From the depiction of the RAW setup to the overall visuals, everything has been handled well and is the best part. The music is a huge letdown, with not a single memorable song. The editing in the second half is choppy, and the VFX looks weak. The major technical aspect that works is the dialogue, which is sharp and impactful.
Unfortunately, director Bhaskar disappoints once again, seeming stuck in the Bommarillu era. His handling of emotions, comedy, and action in the second half is weak. Choosing terrorism as the backdrop and attempting to blend it with comedy backfires due to poor execution.
Verdict:
On the whole, Jack is a weak action-comedy that stumbles in several key areas. Siddhu Jonnalagadda is the only element that brings some sense and charm to the film. If you’re a fan of his comedy, you may find a few redeeming moments. However, the rest of the film derails quickly, making this a below-par outing this week.
