How Diana Williams built Fernwood, Australia’s first women’s fitness empire


Descending the steps of the iconic Georges Building at the Paris end of Melbourne’s Collins Street, the last thing I expected to chat to Fernwood Fitness founder Diana Williams about was artificial intelligence.

But that is how our conversation over lunch at The George on Collins begins. The 80-year-old, who in April retired from the day-to-day operations of the women’s fitness chain she started in Bendigo in 1989, is planning a trip to Malaysia with her husband Larry. ChatGPT, she says, has been instrumental in creating their itinerary – it’s found them restaurants to match their tastes and planned activities for them to do each day.
