How Kolkata Rape accused Monojit Mishra targeted several women
Monojit Mishra, the Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was removed from the Trinamool unit of South Calcutta Law College in 2021.
Former classmates and juniors at the college claimed he used to harass “many other girls” on campus.
A senior police officer told The Telegraph, “Monojit Mishra is a history-sheeter with several cases and chargesheets against him in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction.”
In 2017, Mishra was arrested for violence and assault in the Kalighat area. Police records also show a case from July 2019, when he allegedly tore a woman’s clothes inside South Calcutta Law College, the newspaper reported. A chargesheet was later filed in the case.
That same year, he was accused of theft. Police said he stole a gold chain, perfume, a music system, and spectacles from a friend’s home in Haridevpur on New Year’s Eve. An FIR was filed in early January 2020, and police eventually charged him.
In March 2022, he allegedly harassed a woman in Kasba, according to The Telegraph. More recently, in May 2024, the college administration lodged a complaint against him for assaulting a security guard and damaging college property.
Several students also alleged that Mishra had threatened those who took part in the “Reclaim the Night” movement last year, which took place after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
, the report said.
In a separate incident, The Times of India reported that Mishra was accused in 2017 of damaging the principal’s office.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Debolina Das, a former student of South Calcutta Law College, said Mishra was known for bullying and misconduct, and had once been rusticated from the college.
“Monojit Mishra was in the 2013 batch. He was rusticated because of his behaviour, but later took readmission. He used to call girls to the union room, drink alcohol there, and even kidnap juniors. There were numerous complaints against him, and he was cautioned several times. At one point, he was only allowed to come to college to sit for exams. He always tried to act like a ‘dada’ (local goon), but we tried to stop him,” she told the media outlet.
A college insider told The Times of India that Mishra used to morph pictures of girls and circulate them among his friends.
“He filmed private moments with women and showed them to his friends. He had a tendency to record videos of almost everything. He and his aides used to click photographs of women and post them in groups, body shaming them and maligning them,” the insider said.

Kasba rape case: What happened?
Three people, including Mishra, have been arrested for allegedly gangraping a law student inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College in Kasba.
The incident took place on June 25 between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, after which the Kasba police arrested three individuals in the case.
Apart from Mishra, the other accused are Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both third-semester students at the college.
Police sources told CNN-News18 that the 24-year-old woman arrived at the college around noon on Wednesday to complete examination-related formalities.
In her complaint, she said that she initially waited inside the college union room. Later, the main accused allegedly instructed that the campus gate be locked. The woman was then reportedly raped inside the security guard’s room on the premises.
