Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath has pointed out that while Jasprit Bumrah has found ways to manage the stress that he puts on his body, he will have to work harder off the field to ensure that India have his services when required, since he is such an invaluable player.
Bumrah has been out of action for the last two months after a stress-induced back injury forced him out of the Champions Trophy.
Bumrah didn’t bowl at all on the final day of the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and, since then, has been recuperating at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
“He puts more stress on his body than the other bowlers. He has found ways to manage it, but unfortunately not all the time. He has done it before, he will know better than anyone the recovery time, the time in the gym,” McGrath said while speaking to The Times of India.
“He has to work even harder off the field. Being a fast bowler is like driving a car. If you do not top it up with fuel, you are going to run out of fuel sooner or later. My fuel tank was bigger than Jasprit’s because I did not bowl as quickly as him,” McGrath added.
Meanwhile, Bumrah is all set to miss the first few IPL 2025 games for the Mumbai Indians as he continues to recover from the back injury that has kept him out of action for the last two months.
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Bumrah is expected to join the team by early next month. Mumbai have three matches scheduled this month and subject to clearance from the medical team at the CoE, Bumrah can fly in for the games.
The ace India pacer has been recuperating from the stress-related injury in his lower back, which he suffered on the second day of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on Saturday, January 4.
Bumrah was ruled out of the Champions Trophy, which India won on Sunday, March 9. This is the first time he has gone down with a back injury since undergoing surgery in March 2023.
