Rabindra Ghosh – the lawyer of Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu Das, the monk arrested in Bangladesh — arrived in India on Sunday night for medical treatment.

A senior lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, Ghosh is the founder-president of the Bangladesh Minority Watch. He came under attack by a group of lawyers when he was moving an application for an early bail hearing for Das in the Chittagong court.

The Dhaka resident is staying with his son Rahul, who has been residing in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal for several years.

In an exclusive interview to News18, Ghosh said that he has more than 1,000 complaints of minorities being attacked in Bangladesh and that he is determined to fight for them.

Edited excerpts:

What led you to come to India?

I come to India regularly. I will stay for one week and then will go back to Bangladesh. I am going to AIIMS Hospital for my health check-up. I had a couple of check-ups and will go back.

How would you define the situation in Bangladesh?

We have been fighting for minorities for long. Our organisation in Bangladesh has been fighting for people who are tortured. We are also working for protection of women, children and other people whose human rights have been violated. Das is a wonderful person and he is working for people. The situation there is bad, very bad.

What happened when you went to represent Das?

I appeared on behalf of Das. It was hard. We went to Chittagong, where a group of lawyers stopped us and misbehaved with me. Within the court premises, they tried to beat me up. Even lawyers are trying to implicate other lawyers. What’s this? They are putting pressure to ensure nobody stands for Das. I have been threatened inside the court. Bangladesh is seeing gang rape, rapes, land grab…I have got more than 1,000 complaints.

Did the police administration help you?

After all this, when we approached the police and administration, they did help me. They almost ‘gheraoed’ me and then saved me.

Do you think that Bangladesh is dominated by fundamentalists?

It is true now that the country has been taken up by Islamic fundamentalists. We have always fought against this.
