Why GTA 6 likely won’t come to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the near future

As the highly awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) prepares to release, gamers are looking forward to playing the game on as many consoles as possible. As Nintendo Switch 2 prepares for release in 2025, rumors have emerged about the idea of Rockstar Games porting the next installment of the legendary series to Nintendo’s next-generation system. That is not going to happen anytime soon for several reasons.

Why GTA 6 most likely won’t appear on Nintendo Switch 2 anytime soon

While the Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant improvement over the original, it is still not up to the standards of the latest-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. This renders it an uphill battle for a game like GTA 6, which is set to break boundaries for gaming hardware with its expansive open world and high-definition graphics.
GTA 6 will most probably aim for the next-generation capabilities of present consoles, and with the Switch 2 being limited, transferring the game to this console appears to be not practical, at least in the immediate future. The Nintendo Switch 2 can probably play games such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Elden Ring, but these games were made to scale on older hardware. GTA 6 will, however, be a pure next-gen affair, and it is likely Rockstar Games would prioritize current-gen hardware before considering porting over to the Switch 2.

Switch 2’s specifications and Rockstar’s priorities

While the Switch 2 is definitely a powerful console, its specifications are probably more in the range of last-gen consoles, like the PlayStation 4. Compared to that, GTA 6 is being made with the sheer horsepower of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in mind. As with the launch of games such as Elden Ring on the Switch 2, new console ports usually involve sacrifices in performance, such as lower frame rates or visual downgrades. GTA 6 might not be the type of game that can tolerate such sacrifices, particularly given its large, immersive world.
Furthermore, Rockstar will also be inclined to focus on current-gen platforms and PC as a starting point for the game’s launch. As much as anything, considering their past behavior, they will probably not prefer the Switch 2 over larger audience bases with superior hardware.
In summary, while both GTA 6 and Switch 2 fans might dream about a future port, it is evident that Rockstar will likely prioritize the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC first. Differences in hardware and the necessity for a high-end version of GTA 6 mean that a Switch 2 release is an improbable proposition in the near future.
