ChatGPT’s new Ghibli-style filter has taken social media by storm, transforming iconic moments like the Raj-Simran train scene and Donald Trump’s post-assassination attempt photo into anime illustrations. Netizens are having a blast with this new feature.
However, this feature has not come without its share of drawbacks. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, said the newfound craze has caused the company’s GPUs to overload. “It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT but our GPUs are melting,” Altman said in an X post.
Altman announced that ChatGPT will temporarily introduce rate limits for Ghibli photos “while we work on making it more efficient.” He also said that free ChatGPT users will also get three generations per day soon.

“Also, we are refusing some generations that should be allowed; we are fixing these as fast we can,” he added.

What Is Ghibli?
OpenAI’s GPT-4o model has introduced an in-built Studio Ghibli image generation feature that lets users give an anime makeover to any picture, from iconic movie scenes to tragedies to childhood photos to proposals. This Ghibli feature has become an overnight sensation among users.
People are uploading their images and getting them stylised by the AI chatbot and it works on web as well as mobile platforms. Altman himself updated his display picture to a Ghibli-style AI image. “Changed my pfp but maybe someone will make me a better one,” he wrote in the caption.

According to ChatGPT, Studio Ghibli is a “renowned Japanese animation studio, famous for creating beautifully crafted, imaginative, and emotionally resonant films. It was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, two influential directors in the world of animation.”
The OpenAI CEO has been overwhelmed by the response to the new image generator. “Be me, grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever, mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything, wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha’,” he said.
After the viral trend, a video from 2016 resurfaced in which Studio Ghibli’s legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is seen lashing out during an AI demonstration from staff. “I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself,” an English translation of his remarks said in the video.
This feature comes as OpenAI is facing a barrage of lawsuits over copyright infringements, including one major case with the New York Times and others from artists, musicians and publishers.
