Fort Stewart lockdown: Active shooter in Army base in Georgia, casualty reported

Parts of the Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia were locked down Wednesday (August 6, 2025) after an active shooter was reported on the sprawling Army post, a spokesperson said.

Casualties have been reported after the incident, Fort Stewart said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (August 6, 2025).

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene,” it said, adding the incident took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.

No further information was immediately available, including on the number of casualties and their severity.

Fort Stewart said in the Facebook post that “casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.” It’s unclear whether casualties include injuries, deaths or both. “We are currently assessing the situation but we can confirm an active shooter,” Lt. Col. Angel Tomko said.

Fort Stewart also told all personnel in the locked down area to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.”

Located about 64 km southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It’s home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and family members.

“Due to the lockdown status all gates on Fort Stewart are currently closed,” the fort said on social media.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X that he and his family were “saddened by today’s tragedy” at the base.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he added.
