Edge Of Eternities Debut Showcases Set’s Mechanics, Booster Fun Treatments, And More

Edge of Eternities preview season is officially here. Feast your eyes on all the new cards, mechanics, booster fun treatments, and more from Magic: The Gathering’s next set thanks to Wizards of the Coast’s (WotC) debut video and Weekly MTG stream.

Mechanics

Get up to lightspeed with the new mechanics and ability words coming in Edge of Eternities.

Spacecrafts, Station

Spacecraft is a new artifact subtype introduced in Edge of Eternities. A spacecraft starts out as an artifact, and most can become artifact creatures thanks to the station activated ability. Station functions like mount, as it requires tapping creatures at sorcery speed to add charge counters to the spacecraft equal to the tapped creature’s power.

Once the spacecraft has a number of charge counters on it equal to or greater than the number indicated in the circle on the left side of its text box, it becomes a creature with the power and toughness indicated on the right side. Notably, not all spacecrafts become creatures once they meet the indicated number of charge counters. If the spacecraft has no power and toughness, it means the Spacecraft will have the abilities listed in that part of the text box, but it won’t become an artifact creature.

Planet

Planet is a new nonbasic land type. Planets don’t have any rules or functionality tied to them, but the Planets we see in Edge of Eternities all have the station activated ability.

Warp

Warp is an alternative cost. If you cast a card with warp from your hand, you may choose to pay its warp cost rather than its mana cost. If you do, you’ll exile the permanent it becomes at the beginning of the next end step. It then becomes a “warped card.” Once the card is exiled, you can cast it from exile on a later turn.

Void

Void is a new ability word that operates in a similar space to revolt. Void abilities improve what cards can do if a nonland permanent left the battlefield this turn or if a spell was warped this turn.

Lander Tokens

A Lander token is a new predefined token type, like Treasure and Food. A Lander token is a colorless artifact token with an activated ability requiring you to pay two, tap it and sacrifice it to search your library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Previews

A bunch of awesome rares, mythic rares, and uncommons were also previewed across both videos. Check out a new take on Tarmogoyf, a bunch of new legendary cards, a sweet Cancel variant that can draw a card, and more.

Special Guests

We also got to see the first Special Guest in the set, Sliver Overlord! This fan-favorite legendary creature boasts the splashy movie poster treatment.

Stellar Sights

And how about a few more lands appearing on the Stellar Sights bonus sheet? We already knew about Mutavault, but Blinkmoth Nexus, Eldrazi Temple, and Thespian’s Stage also all receive two new alternate-art versions.

Booster Fun Treatments

Speaking of alternate art, get a glimpse of all the new Booster Fun treatments included in Edge of Eternities.

Commander Deck Face Cards

The face cards for the two Commander Decks were unveiled — both of which are legendary spacecrafts!

Finally, a few of the promos for the set were revealed, including the Buy-A-Box promo, Bundle promo, and the first of five cards coming in the promo pack.

Edge of Eternities will release worldwide on August 1.
