Michelle Obama and Barack Obama were not seen together at another high-profile event where former and current US presidents and first ladies were seen.

A section of netizens are speculating if former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama are heading for a divorce after it was confirmed the former first lady will not attend US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
“I think Barack and Michelle Obama are heading for divorce,” an X user said, and posted a screenshot of Barack Obama’s old letters from 1982 where he admitted that he thought about making love to men. Another tried to defend the couple and said Michelle was mourning the loss of her mother, Marian Robinson, who died last May.
Social media sleuths pointed out that it is the second time in the space of a month that Michelle is skipping an official event. Her husband was seen attending former US president Jimmy Carter’s funeral by himself.
His conversation with Donald Trump during the funeral drew attention from news outlets and social media and pictures and videos soon went viral.
“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” the office of the Obamas said.
Deliberate Move?
Barack and Michelle Obama started dating in 1989 and tied the knot in 1992. They are proud parents to two daughters.
However, a report by the New York Post said Michelle Obama’s skipping of the ceremony is deliberate.
“She’s never been fake and she’s never been phony. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up,” a person close to the Obamas told the newspaper.
“She showed up reluctantly for the election. They were united, but she doesn’t have to unify around [Trump]. She doesn’t have to say anything. Her absence speaks volumes,” the person further added.
