Trinamool Congress leader Dulal, also known as Babla Sarkar, was shot dead on Thursday in West Bengal’s Malda district. Sarkar, a TMC councillor from Ward 22 of English Bazar Municipality, died from his injuries after being shot in broad daylight.
According to Bengali news website ABP Ananda, local sources revealed that Dulal was on his way to his factory after leaving the Trinamool Congress party office on Thursday morning when the attack took place.
Four assailants, riding two motorcycles, approached from behind and fired a total of four rounds. Sarkar was hit by three bullets, with injuries sustained in his shoulder.
Reacting to his death, party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed his passing during an administrative review meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna.
The West Bengal CM criticised Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav, holding him responsible for the incident.
“Our councilor in Malda has been killed today due to the lackadaisical approach of the district police superintendent. He used to have security cover, which was later withdrawn. This is a clear lapse on the part of the police. Babla was with me since the beginning,” she said.
In a post on X, Banerjee described Sarkar as her “close associate” and confirmed that he had been “murdered.”
“My close associate, and a very popular leader, Babla Sarkar has been murdered today. From the beginning of the Trinamool Congress, he (and his wife Chaitali Sarkar) worked hard for the party, and Babla was also elected a councillor. I am sad and hugely shocked after knowing about the incident. The culprits must be booked immediately,” said Mamata Banerjee in her post on X.

Adding to her note, Mamata Banerjee said she is shocked and does not know how to convey condolences to the bereaved family.
“May God give Chaitali strength to survive and fight the battle,” she the Chief Minister added.
Shortly after the incident, Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee urged the police to take swift action, regardless of political affiliations.
