A candidate interviewed for an Associate role in Compliance at Goldman Sachs’ Bengaluru office in October last year. After completing the document verification process, HR went silent for three months. When they finally reached out in January, it wasn’t with the promised role but a downgraded Analyst position. While the offer came with a fixed salary of 25 LPA, an 87 per cent hike from their current pay, the candidate called it a “lowball offer”.

The candidate turned to Reddit for advice, believing the offer to be a “lowball”.

“So I interviewed at Goldman Sachs in October for an Associate role- Compliance BLR. I feel I gave interviews very well (Solved all DSA problems and also performed well in design rounds as well). After 5-6 days, HR sent me an email to send all salary documents and offer letters from all employers. She counted each month by month, I have 6 months intern +1.1 years full-time + 3 months gap + 1.6 years experience – so a total (of 3.1 with 6 months internship included). She removed intern experience and told me that we could only give Analyst roles, and they also lowballed me as my salary is very low, which I agreed with as I felt something is better than nothing. After that, everything disappeared, and they ghosted and had no contact from October,” the candidate, who goes by “No_Baby3592″, wrote on Reddit.

They continued, “In mid-January, they called me and sent a new job link for an Analyst and asked me to apply so that they could process my application, did a lot of background checks, asked me to fill the form and after 10 days HR called me and asked if I am still interested and extended the same offer which she discussed earlier.”

The candidate also revealed that HR verbally offered a ₹5 lakh bonus but failed to include it in the offer letter. “I asked her to mail at least for which she denied and told me that it is the same for everyone in the firm and asked me to have some faith. I am very pissed off by their lowballing and behaviour. Is it the same for everyone in the firm? bonus is not mentioned anywhere. What if they don’t even give any bonus after 1 year?” they further expressed.

Towards the end of the post, the candidate turned to Reddit for advice. “If I accept the offer, is this a good company and team? I am a backend developer with experience in Java, Spring boot, AWS, and microservices. Will I get the same kind of work or any outdated tech stack or infra kind of work? Please help me,” they asked.

The post received over 180 upvotes and numerous comments from Reddit users. “25+5 for three years of experience is quite a good package in this market. Try to crack Atlassian or those that offer high packages to get that 50L package!” said one software engineer.

Another added, “No sane company calculates internship experience in work experience. Not even colleges do it (for MBA). So not sure why you’re specially mentioning it.”

“Bro it is a good offer, I suggest you take it,” expressed a third.
