Bombay Velvet, the Anurag Kashyap directorial 2015 period gangster drama, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, turned out to be one of the biggest disasters of Bollywood. Backed by Vikas Bahl and Vikramaditya Motwane, it was based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables. Recalling the film’s massive failure, the National Award-winning musician, Amit Trivedi, shared it was the lowest phase of his life.
During an interview with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Trivedi shared that he had worked on the film’s music for four years and didn’t expect it to be a disaster. “Shayad bahut mehnat chali gayi thi ussme. 4 saal lagaye the ussme, aap kisi pe itni energy dalte ho, saalo ki energy aap daal dete ho, kuch toh aap result acha expect karoge, kuch toh but disaster expect nahi karoge. (I worked on the music for four years, devoting a lot of passion and effort. Naturally, I had great expectations. But what happened was beyond what I could have expected. Not only did the picture fail, but it was a disaster.),” he shared.
Furthermore, the singer-composer shared that we worked hard to introduce Jazz music to Bollywood with Bombay Velvet. But the film’s failure made him feel hopeless and he began to wonder what he was doing in life and why he was creating such music.
“Toh sab kuch disaster ho gaya, aaye gaye chala bhi nahi, ‘aaye itna bura, itna bura toh nahi hona tha’ thik hai bura hota rehta hai par itna. (Everything was a disaster. The film came and did not work. So horrible; it shouldn’t have been so bad. Yes, things do not work, but to this extent was unbelievable.),” Trivedi said.
Bombay Velvet also featured Karan Johar and Kay Kay Menon in significant roles.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Trivedi is known for composing songs in films like Dev D, Secret Superstar, Wake Up Sid, Aisha, Kai Po Che, Dear Zindagi, Udta Punjab, Kedarnath, Manmarziyan, Pad Man and others.
He has also been conferred with the prestigious National Film Award for Best Music Director for his compositions in the 2009 film Dev D featuring Abhay Deol.
