Bengaluru: A 29-year-old man from Bengaluru, Akshay, died five days after an accident in which a tree branch crashed onto his head, raising urgent questions about civic negligence in the city.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon near Banashankari 1st Stage while Akshay was returning from a nearby meat shop. It was his father’s birthday, and what should have been a day of quiet celebration ended in tragedy. A large branch suddenly snapped and fell on him, causing catastrophic head injuries.
CCTV footage confirmed the moment the branch struck him. Akshay was first rushed to a private hospital in Srinivasanagar and later shifted to Apollo Hospital in Jayanagar for advanced treatment. Despite intensive care, including surgery, he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Wednesday. Doctors said the blow was so severe that his skull had fractured into 12 pieces.

In a desperate effort to save him, Akshay’s grandparents had even performed a Mrityunjaya Homa the day before he died. The BBMP, Bengaluru’s civic body, had cleared Rs 4.06 lakh in medical expenses, but the family says the gesture cannot undo the damage.
Akshay’s grieving relatives have squarely blamed the BBMP for neglecting tree maintenance in the city and demanded accountability.
