Apple hits pause on AI notification summaries for news in iOS 18.3 after accuracy complaints

The move follows user and publisher complaints about the summaries sometimes pulling inaccurate or misleading details from news stories.

For example, BBC News flagged that some of its notifications were summarised incorrectly, leading to false headlines. Apple acknowledged the issue and promised to refine the feature, with plans to bring back news summaries in a future update.

What’s New in iOS 18.3?

Notification Summaries now include a warning in Settings, letting users know the feature is still in beta and may not be perfect.

Summarised text now appears in italics to differentiate it from regular notifications.

Users can now swipe left on a Notification Summary from the Lock Screen and adjust settings to disable summaries for specific apps.

It is available for users on iOS 18.1 or later. The feature was introduced to group multiple notifications from the same app together, providing an overview to users without needing to go through the whole stack. It causes issues when the AI pulls the wrong details from the news stories.

For now, Notification Summaries remain active for non-news apps and can be toggled off entirely through the Notifications section in Settings.
