With the political action thriller Empuraan, legendary Mollywood hero Mohanlal created a sensation of sorts. The biggie grossed more than Rs. 260 crores globally and emerged as the new industry hit of Malayalam cinema. Empuraan created several records even before hitting the screens. In less than a month’s gap, Mohanlal came up with another film, Thudaram.
Directed by Tharun Moorthy, Thudaram is a crime thriller set in the Drishyam zone. Generally, when a hero gets back-to-back releases in a short span, there is a high possibility that the movies will underperform. However, Mohanlal’s stardom is doing the unthinkable as Thudaram is also off to a flying start at the box office.
On its opening day, the film sold over 400K tickets on the Book My Show portal, a figure relatively bigger than Empuraan. According to early estimates, the movie collected around Rs. 14 crores gross worldwide, which is a solid start for a Malayali movie. In Kerala, Thudaram collected nearly Rs. 6 crores gross. The film will release in Telugu today.
Mohanlal didn’t promote the film much, yet it started on a strong note. While other heroes are struggling to give a decent opening, Lalettan is flexing his muscles at the box office even at the age of 64. Thudaram reports are unanimously positive, and this will surely help the movie post superb numbers over the weekend. Shobana played Mohanlal’s wife.
