Afghanistan vs South Africa Live Score: Tony de Zorzi plays a shot.
Afghanistan vs South Africa Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat against Afghanistan, in Karachi on Friday. Both sides will be opening their respective campaign and this is the third Champions Trophy 2025 match. The Proteas are still hunting for their first ICC trophy, and Afghanistan, whose debut in the ICC Champions Trophy signals another big step in the rise of a nation attempting to establish itself as one of the world’s best.…Read More
Afghanistan’s debut is going to be an exciting one to watch, a country that seems to improve at cricket with every passing year, spearheaded by a couple of superstars but with plenty of quality players and firepower throughout now. Three massive victories in the 2023 ODI World Cup, notably over England and Pakistan, helped the team qualify for their first tilt in the Champions Trophy, where they will be captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Afghanistan have enjoyed a fairly strong run since the World Cup as well, winning 8 and losing only five of the ODIs they have played since, giving them some sort of momentum heading into the tournament. Notably, this includes a 2-1 series win over today’s opponents South Africa, when they hosted the Proteas for a three-match series in Sharjah last year. This was no weakened South African unit either: it was their star players, most of the team involved in this tournament, who were simply outclassed in one of the more significant bilateral performances in recent memory.
All eyes will be on Rashid Khan, but Afghanistan also boast of ICC’s ODI Player of the Year for 2024, with all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai having averaged 52 with the bat and 20 with the ball to establish himself as one of the premier pace bowling all-rounders in Asia. Nothing to scoff at, given the rarity of his kind, and another big boost as Afghanistan try and shed the tag of the plucky underdog, and try to become recognised as true dark-horse contenders in their own right. They won’t consider their semifinal appearance at last year’s T20 World Cup to be an aberration.
Meanwhile, this generation of South African cricket strives to establish itself as arguably the best cross-format team once again, after a brief blip in recent years. Semifinal at the ODI World Cup, final at the T20 World Cup, and a World Test Championship final at Lord’s to look forward to, that’s all well and good for Temba Bavuma’s spirited and talented unit. But at home, and from shores abroad, the question is the same: where is the silverware to commemorate all that good work?
The pieces are all there. A phenomenal middle order with Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller, experienced pros in Aiden Markram and Bavuma, spin through Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, a pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada, inarguably the best seamer in the competition still left standing. This team has made a habit of making deep runs in tournaments, but they still need that extra oomph to get over the line.
They will, however, not consider the Afghanistan team to be pushovers by any means. These two teams have only competed in five ODIs ever, and it’s a narrow 3-2 lead for South Africa in terms of head-to-head. One of the South African wins came all the way back in the 2019 World Cup, which may as well be 60 years ago and not just 6 in terms of how rapidly the Afghans have progressed. South Africa’s batting was dominated by Afghanistan’s bowling twice in Sharjah last year, so the wariness and the respect against this opposition will be very, very real from the Proteas.
Both teams will have the benefit of having watched the opening match of this tournament played in Karachi, and will know what the pitch will play like. With minimal movement and plenty of runs to be had, the powerful hitters on both teams will be licking their lips — but this also means it could very easily come down to how well Rashid Khan performs, and if he can break the spin-vulnerable batting of South Africa. They will miss the massively talented Allah Ghazanfar, but have able replacements in Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman. Similarly, can Rabada, Jansen and company be potent for the Proteas if the pitch doesn’t offer their bowlers too much lateral movement? In a wide-open Group B, this promises to be a hugely significant contest.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Decent opening over by Farooqi
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Farooqi begins with an inswinger, and it ends up being a low full-toss. Rickleton toe-ends it to mid-on. Then it is another dot, followed by Farooqi sending it on length, on middle. Rickleton drives it with ease, on the up, past the left of mid-off for a four as SA open their account!
Farooqi wraps up the over with a streak of three dot balls, and an lbw appeal in the final delivery.. Good start by both sides.
SA: 4/0 (1)

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: What did the captains say?
After winning the toss, SA captain Temba Bavuma said, “We will have a bat first. Looks a bit different that what we have been experiencing here, not sure how will it react. Will try to post a competitive total on the board. I have a lot of confidence in our bowling attack, today we have gone for a lone spinner in Shamsi and the rest are seamers.”
Meanwhile, AFG skipper Shahidi stated, “We would have won the toss we would have batted first but the toss is not in our hands and we have to play good cricket. We played some quality cricket against them in Sharjah and we have quality spinners. Hopefully, we do well and can beat them. I will be more happy if we start well and take some wickets in the powerplay and give some momentum to our bowlers in the middle overs.”

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: “Just recently we beat them in Sharjah 2-1, so we have that confidence with us and we are not under pressure. Right now we are focusing on what we can do in this tournament. I believe that our team is more ready for this tournament and we are focusing on our own team. There is no pressure on us, said Shahidi.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: ‘No real baggage exists amongst the guys’ – Temba Bavuma
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Speaking ahead of the match, SA skipper Temba Bavuma said, “Like all the tournaments, we will come in with the prospect of seeing ourselves in the final but eventually obviously getting over the line. The nice thing is that we have guys with that experience and there’s no there’s no real baggage that exists amongst the guys. There’s no negativity from the fact that we haven’t been able to be successful in other ICC events. There’s a lot more of a positivity and confidence in terms of our ability or how far we can go within the tournament.”

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: SA’s twin threat!
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Miller and Rabada are the only two SA players with more than 100 ODI caps in this squad. Miller will need to contribute with the bat, but also has the advantage of a strong top order. But Rabada will need to lead the bowling attack, and will hope to be supported today.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Will AFG miss Ghazanfar?
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Rashid’s threat, however, was compounded with the operation of youngster Allah Ghazanfar from the other end. Ghazanfar looked ready to be a star, with this as his breakout tournament, but a long-term back injury means they won’t have his services in this tournament. They still have a stock of good spinners in Mujeed Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad, who will need to step up if they want to keep a clamp on the Proteas’ scoring rate at this batting haven.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: But Rashid Khan still the talisman
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Afghanistan are no longer in a position where their hopes begin and end with Rashid Khan’s wickets, but that doesn’t mean the phenomenal leg-spinner isn’t a threat to any team he faces. Even in the series against South Africa last year, he led the wicket-taking tally, including a five-fer. Add to that all the experience he has against South Africa’s batters in franchise leagues around the world, and there is no question that the wily leggie will have something up his sleeve for some of the strongest hitters in world cricket.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Afghanistan’s ICC Player of the Year winner
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Of all the star names, one wouldn’t have expected the ICC ODI Player of the Year of 2024 to be Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, but what else can be the case when you have a player averaging 52 with bat and 20 with ball, with a CV that involves some crucial match-winning performances on both fronts? He might be one of the less-heralded players to watch in this tournament, a true difference-maker.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Kagiso Rabada, the best pacer in the tournament
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: On the bowling front, despite some injuries to the likes of Gerald Coetzee and Anrich Nortje, it is still a fearsome pace attack for the South African team. Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, and Corbin Borsch form a strong unit, but it is Kagiso Rabada who will be the star.
With names such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins out of this tournament, Rabada is the best pacer any team has in their ranks. It comes down to him to provide the performances that this tag warrants.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: South Africa’s middle order threat
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: For South Africa, the biggest threat is the power that is packed into the middle order. Tristan Stubbs, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller is certainly the strongest middle order in the tournament, in terms of six-hitting power and the ability to stretch those 300s to 350s, 350s to 400s.
However, there is definitely a vulnerability to spin in that unit. And who likelier to exploit it than Rashid Khan?

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Afghanistan fresh off series victory vs South Africa
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Afghanistan have only faced off against the Proteas on five occasions in ODI cricket, once in each of the 2019 and 2023 World Cups, and then more recently in their first-ever series in a three-match bout in Sharjah in the summer of 2024.
Afghanistan sent a message to their opposition in that series, dominating them in two matches to win that series in emphatic fashion. Don’t think the result of this match is pre-decided.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: Afghanistan’s debut amongst the elite
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: For the first time in their history, Afghanistan have qualified as one of the premier eight teams to make it to the Champions Trophy. For a country in which cricket plays such an important role, this is a big landmark — but that is not to say they will be intimidated by the bright lights. Afghanistan are here to compete, and in a weakened group, in Asian conditions, are solid bets to qualify as well.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: South Africa looking for another ICC final
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: The Proteas fell short in a heartbreaker of a final in Barbados last year, losing to India despite looking in pole position to win their first senior men’s ICC trophy. They have also gone on to qualify for the WTC final later this year at Lord’s. Across formats, this team has been consistent and powerful — but with nothing to show for it. They are due, and in a weakened group, they know there can be no excuses.

South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: We are back in Karachi
South Africa vs Afghanistan LIVE Score: After yesterday’s match took us to Dubai, we are back at the National Stadium in Karachi, where Pakistan opened proceedings for the tournament, but succumbed to a hefty loss against New Zealand. The teams will know what to expect: fairly flat conditions, plenty on offer for the batters, a hard day’s work for the bowlers. There won’t be any hiding for either of these teams, that’s for sure.
