Gui Malheiros Will Not Attempt to Qualify for 2025 CrossFit Games; Shifts Focus to World Fitness Project

In a series of stories on Instagram today, Gui Malheiros officially announced that he will not pursue qualifying for the 2025 CrossFit Games. Instead, Malheiros will narrow his focus on competing in the World Fitness Project.

Malheiros said that he was undecided as of last Monday on whether to officially register for the CrossFit Open. But after speaking with Jorge Fernandez, Malheiros decided to sign up for the Open for the community and because the Rogue Invitational Point System awards points for an athlete’s performance in the CrossFit Open.

But while Malheiros is on the Open leaderboard, he will only compete at the Mayhem Classic. Outside of that, he will not do the In-Affiliate Semifinals or any of the other In-Person Qualifying Events, including Copa Sur in Brazil.

Instead, Malheiros said he will compete and put his effort into doing well at the World Fitness Project events.

“Logically, financially it’s much, much better for me to compete in the WFP,” explained Malheiros on his Instagram story. He continued by explaining how the WFP provides a base salary throughout the season and covers his hotel and flight expense to compete at the three WFP events.

Malheiros said on the flipside he incurs significant costs competing in the CrossFit Games season, from registration fees to compete to travel/hotel fees.

“There’s no better place to compete than Brazil. But you have to understand, I have to understand, as well, that this is my profession. So this is where I earn, this is where I pay my bills and everything else,” shared Malheiros.

Malheiros then explained how the WFP is different, “On the other hand I have a contract with an organization that’s treating me as an athlete. That I’m a professional. So while I only get money to compete in the WFP, I don’t spend anything. They pay for my flight. They pay for my hotel and they pay me an annual salary to compete.”

As for Malheiros’ competition schedule the remainder of the year, he will compete at the Mayhem Classic at CrossFit Mayhem on April 5-6. It is an In-Person Qualifying Event so there is still a possibility that he could qualify for the CrossFit Games if he finishes in the top 2.

After that, he will be on the competition floor in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 9-11 for Tour Event 1 of the World Fitness Project. He will then be in Mesa, Arizona, in August for Tour Event 2 and Copenhagen in December for the World Fitness Finals.
