An 18-year-old girl suffered severe anorexia in Kerala. She quit eating months ago and hid it from her parents for a long time, officials said.

An 18-year-old Kerala girl, who allegedly depended on YouTube for the weight loss diet and was surviving on water for months, died due to “anorexia”, officials said on Monday.
A resident of Koothuparamba in Kannur, the teenager was identified as Sreenanda, who was suffering from this eating disorder that causes people to obsess about weight and diet. People suffering from this condition assume themselves as “overweight” even after having a thin physique and would avoid consuming food.
According to the family and doctors, Sreenanda had been suffering from this condition for nearly 5 to 6 months.
They said that the teenager hardly ate anything for some months and hid it from her family members.
“About five months back, she was taken to the hospital, and the doctors advised that she needs to eat and asked the family to get psychiatric consultation,” officials said.
According to a relative, Sreenanda did not use to eat that which was given by her parents and survived on hot water for a long time.
The family took her to Kozhikode Medical College and Hospital, where tests were conducted on her. The doctors advised the family to feed her adequately and get her psychiatric consultation.
Her blood sugar dropped two weeks ago, coupled with breathing issues. She was immediately admitted to Thalaserry Co-operative Hospital.
Dr Nagesh Manohar Prabhu, a consultant physician, said that she was brought to the hospital around 12 days back and was directly admitted to the ICU.
The doctor informed that she was hardly 24 Kg when she was brought to the hospital and was already bedridden.
“Her sugar levels, sodium, BP were low. She was on ventilator support. But her condition did not improve, and she succumbed to her disease,” the doctor said.
