“Completely tone-deaf.” Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, marked her television debut with an 8-episode series titled ‘With Love, Meghan’ on Netflix. With 3.5 out of 10 being the highest rating for any episode in her series on IMDb, it’s safe to say, the show hasn’t resonated with the majority of the viewers, while critics have come out with brutal, scathing reviews that are written with anything but love. In fact, Meghan’s estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., had no nice things to say about the show, rubbishing Meghan’s claims of having modest upbringing.

With all the negative reviews floating around about the show, the likability factor at an all-time low for Meghan, and the show being bombed with 1-star reviews, we try to decode what really went wrong with ‘With Love, Meghan’.

‘With Love, Meghan’ – Premise

Beautiful house decked with lush-garden and serene calm all around, Meghan Markle gives a glimpse on what it is like to be hosted by the Duchess of Sussex as special guests come over to hang with her and share joy. Shot in a $8-million farmhouse in California’s Montecito, Meghan entertains guests with honey harvesting, candle-making, cooking, and gardening spanned across eight episodes. Meghan is soft and warm on the camera, entertaining her guests with stories and anecdotes of life, as the aesthetically-shot Netflix series aims to be a comforting, slow-burn, and cushiony watch.

No Love to Meghan – Public reviews

The finely-curated farmhouse and the slow-pace aesthetic of the show soon take a backseat as Meghan’s antics in front of the camera come across as out of touch and simply put, jarring.

In their lengthy review, and IMDb user wrote: “The Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix series is an exercise in narcissim, filled with extravagant brunches, celebrity pals and business plugs.”

It only gets worse.

“Meghan Markle’s new show is a dystopian fever dream that underscores the class divide in our society. It’s also just downright boring,” an X user wrote while dissecting her pretzel shenanigans.

Some viewers have deduced that Meghan’s show is a bad rip-off of Pamela Anderson’s ‘Pamela’s Cooking With Love’ that, according to them, had genuine depth and felt authentic as she invested chefs and cooked plant-based meals with them.

There are, however, a few people who have shown love to Meghan calling her “unpretentious” and “down to earth”.

“Wholesome, down to earth, unpretentious, fun loving realness. Everything the Royal Family isn’t. Meghan Markle is a natural & shines through. You don’t have to like her to like the show & you don’t have to like the show because you like her. But if you’re bitching about the show just because it’s Meghan you’re petty & vindictive and thanks for binge-watching it!” wrote one.

Another person quipped that the hate for Meghan was unwarranted and that folks went out of their way to watch the show with the sole intention of dissecting and shredding it to pieces.

Controversies

Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother slammed the formal royal for her claim on the show that she “grew up with a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners”. He doubled-down on the criticism and told TalkTV that he could do better things with his time than watch the show. “The entire world knows how she treated her family, especially her father, who gave her everything. That’s why nobody’s buying it.”

The show was embroiled in controversy even before it was dropped on Netflix on March 4. Meghan deleted the behind-the-scenes video of herself on Instagram where her husband Prince Harry makes an appearance but she deleted it after backlash for it being eerily similar to Pamela Anderson’s show only to reupload it later.

Meghan – loved earlier, disliked now

The meter of Meghan being extremely likeable has, over the time, shifted.

“I liked her when she got married to Prince Harry, I believed she brought something different to the royal family which would be good since it’s an old institution,” wrote a Redditor before continuing, “I completely started to dislike her and Harry after they came to Africa, South Africa and turned what was a very successful visit into a platform to complain about petty family drama. I’m African so I know how much those visits mean to the charities/organisations and how much preparation goes into them, so to see that all overshadowed was sad.”

“I also couldn’t understand how they managed to have the nerve to complain about their circumstances after meeting mothers struggling to feed and provide for their children and domestic violence victims, some situations should give you perspective and you should let those less fortunate have their moment.”

“She’s rich and famous but endlessly complains about how hard her life is,” wrote another user. “She married into the royal family of England and yet endlessly complains about how there is snooty behavior, pettiness and drama despite the fact that everything she hates about the royal family is literally their f*****g brand and has been for centuries.”
