Zomato CEO, Zepto CEO Dispute
Zepto CEO Palicha has disputed the statements made by the Zomato CEO, in which he said that quick commerce companies were burning around Rs 5,000 crore on a quarterly basis, with Zepto accounting for over half of that amount.
Zomato CEO, Zepto CEO Dispute
It started when Zomato founder Goyal, in an interview with Economic Times, said that the country’s quick commerce industry is collectively burning around Rs 5,000 crore in cash every quarter. He further added that Blinkit—Zomato’s quick commerce arm — accounts for just 2-3 per cent of that amount, while Zepto loses substantially more than 2,500 crore per quarter.
“Deepinder Goyal – whom I deeply respect as an entrepreneur – made an inaccurate statement about Zepto. This statement is verifiably untrue and it will be clear when we publicly file our financial statements,” the Zepto CEO and co-founder stated in a social media post.
Palicha added that Goyal has only good intentions. “This quote could have been an honest mistake.”
In the interview, Goyal went on to add that Zepto have burned Rs 2,200-2,300 crore last quarter and we (Blinkit) have burned 4 per cent of that but still gained market share.
Reacting to the Zomato CEO’s comments, Palicha stated, “Deepinder started Zomato when I was 5 years old and he has become a role model for the Indian startup ecosystem. I have personally read all of his blogs and it’s a privilege to learn from and compete with Zomato.”
“Our genuine intention is to build the Indian startup ecosystem together in good-faith, and build a world-class product for the Indian consumer.”
Worth mentioning here is that Zepto is the only independent player in India’s quick commerce segment and has raised over $1.3 billion over the past year ahead of its plans to go public in 2025.
