Electronics company Phillips faced social media backlash following Glenn Phillips’ spectacular catch that dismissed Virat Kohli during the India vs New Zealand ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group B match in Dubai on Sunday.
Kohli, playing his 300th ODI, came to bat after Shubman Gill’s dismissal. He looked to continue his strong form following his century against Pakistan in the previous match.

However, that was stopped short by Glenn Phillips‘ remarkable one-handed catch which left the batter and the crowd stunned. As a result of the dismissal, Kohli could only add 11 runs to his overall tally from 14 balls. During the contest, Kohli became the seventh Indian to play 300 ODIs and became the first cricketer worldwide to complete 300 ODIs, 100 Tests, and 100 T20Is.
Kohli’s fans expressed their anger on social media, mistakenly targeting the electronics company Philips instead of cricketer Glenn Phillips on Instagram.
“Kohli ko kyu out kiya (Why did you dismiss Kohli?)”
“Kohli tera baap hai (Kohli is your father)”
Some fans later pointed out the error, clarifying that their fellow supporters had confused the electronics company with the cricketer.
New Zealand won the toss and decided to field. India started poorly before recovering under Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and late surge by Hardik Pandya to reach 249/9. Iyer led the scoring with 79 runs from 98 balls, while Hardik and Axar contributed 45 and 42 runs, respectively.
New Zealand’s Matt Henry emerged as the leading bowler, claiming five wickets for 42 runs.
In response, New Zealand were bundled out for 205 runs, losing by 44 runs. Kane Williamson was motoring along but when he fell for 81 (120), the Black Caps challenge faltered as well. Varun Chakaravarthy was the pick of the bowlers, taking a fifer on his Champions Trophy debut.
India will now take on Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final on Tuesday while New Zealand will travel to Lahore to face South Africa in the other last-four clash.
