Family of 35-year-old Neelam Shinde has got a call from the US embassy in Mumbai for a visa interview on Friday, February 28. This came after the Ministry of External Affairs took up the matter, with the American side assuring that they were looking into the formalities for early grant of visa.

Shinde, who hails from Maharashtra’s Satara, was allegedly hit by a four-wheeler in California over 10 days ago and has been in a coma since. Her family had sought the Centre’s assistance in getting a visa to the US.

A report in NDTV quoted Neelam’s father Tanaji Shinde as saying that she had gone to America for higher education and was a fourth-year student at California State University.

The report further quoted Shinde family as saying that Neelam met with an accident on February 14, while she was out on an evening walk.

The family alleged that it was a case of hit-and-run case as the car hit the Satara native from behind, leading to serious injuries to both her arms, legs, head and chest.

Neelam’s family was reportedly informed about the accident two days later by her roommate. The 35-year-old woman has been admitted to C Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, where she is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.

“She has gone into a coma due to a blow to the chest,” the family was quoted.
