Telangana SLBC Tunnel Collapse: Workers are feared trapped after a section of the under-construction Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel near Domalapenta collapsed in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district on Saturday morning. According to PTI, at least six to eight workers are trapped and the rescue operation is underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Telangana CM and discussed the rescue of personnel at the SLBC tunnel. The PM assured all help and assistance in the rescue efforts.

The officials stated that about three meters of the tunnel’s roof collapsed near the Srisailam reservoir while workers were carrying out their daily tasks. The tunnel work began only four days ago, they added.

“A portion of the SLBC tunnel behind the Srisailam dam near Domalapenta experienced a collapse on Saturday. In particular, at the 14th km point, the roof of the left-side tunnel collapsed for three meters. This happened when employees were performing their duties at the site,” said Vaibhav Gaikwad, Superintendent of Police, Nagarkurnool.

He said that two rescue teams from the company handling the irrigation project had entered the tunnel to evaluate the situation. “We don’t have precise details yet. The location is about 14 km inside the tunnel, and we will only understand the full extent of the situation once the rescue teams return,” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

There were 50 workers at the site during the incident, and around 43 have emerged safely, said an official, adding that the police were alerted about the collapse at around 10 a.m.

Speaking about the incident, one of the labourers working there said, “Eight people are still trapped inside the tunnel. We are from Jharkhand.” He also shared the names of some of them.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the incident, confirming that several people were injured in the collapse. However, he did not provide any specific number.

“After receiving information about the tunnel collapse and several injuries, the Chief Minister immediately alerted the officials. He ordered the District Collector, SP, Fire Department, Hydra, and Irrigation Department officials to immediately reach the spot and provide relief measures,” said the CMO.

Meanwhile, BRS leader KT Rama Rao slammed the Congress government over its alleged neglect of quality standards. He further accused the government of compromising on supervision due to collusion with contractors and the pursuit of commissions.

“The repeated occurrence of such incidents is a direct result of the government’s neglect of quality standards and oversight in their rush to secure commissions,” Rama Rao said.
