Thrissur: The evergreen romantic voice of Malayalam film songs, playback singer P Jayachandran (80) passed away in a private hospital at Thrissur. He was undergoing treatment for cancer for sometime now.
Jayachandran, renowned for his contributions to Indian cinema, recorded over 16,000 songs in multiple languages. He worked with some of the most prominent composers, including G. Devarajan, M. S. Baburaj, Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, M. M. Keeravani, and Vidyasagar, among others.

Regarded as one of the greatest Malayalam singers, Jayachandran won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986. He also received the Kerala State Film Award five times and was honoured with the prestigious J. C. Daniel Award in 2020 for his outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema. In addition, he won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
Born on March 3, 1944, in Ravipuram, Kochi, Jayachandran was the third of five children of the late Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran, a member of the Cochin royal family and a musician, and the late Paliyath Subhadrakkunjamma.
