India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final ended on Sunday, January 5, after the Jasprit Bumrah-led side went down by six wickets against Australia in the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 2023 WTC winners chased down the target of 162 runs in 27 overs for the loss of four wickets. India missed Bumrah’s presence on Sunday after the 31-year-old didn’t come out to bowl in the second innings due to back spasms.

The defeat in the Sydney Test not only knocked India out of the WTC final race, but it also ended India’s dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as after 10 years, the Aussies once again managed to win the bilateral series against India.

After a disappointing end of the 2023-25 WTC cycle, Team India, which ended up on the losing side in the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals, is expected to see many changes before starting the new campaign in June.

India will begin the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a five-match Test series in England. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20-24, and the next four matches will be played from July 2-6 at Edgbaston, July 10-14 at Lord’s, July 23-27 at Old Trafford, and July 31-August 4 at The Oval.

India last toured England in 2021 for a five-match Test series, and the assignment ended with a scoreline of 2-2.

After an away tour of England, India will face the West Indies in a two-match Test series at home. The BCCI is yet to release the schedule of the India-West Indies Test series, but it is most likely to take place in October. India’s third assignment of WTC 2025-27 is a two-match home series against South Africa in November-December 2025.

In 2026, India will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series in August and then face New Zealand in a two-match away series (October-November).

In the last series of the 2025-27 WTC cycle, India will host Australia in a five-match Test series. The 2027 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be played in India (January-February).
