On New Year’s Eve, individuals in a celebratory mood likely placed numerous orders through food delivery apps. Bachelors living far from home often turn to such apps for a good meal, particularly during festivals. However, the search trends on Zomato on New Year’s Eve revealed a humorous pattern. According to data released by the food delivery app, 4,940 people searched for ‘girlfriend’ on the platform.
Furthermore, 40 individuals went so far as to search for a ‘bride’ on Zomato. However, the situation is more nuanced than it appears. These searches were not conducted facetiously. Responding to CNBC TV18 journalist Shirin Bhan’s post on X (formerly Twitter), one individual offered a potential explanation for this behaviour.
An X user, Mustafa Khundmiri, replied below the post, saying, “People are not as stupid as they are being shown to be.” He shared a screenshot in his post that showed the names of two restaurants. The name of one restaurant is Girlfriend Food Court, located in Ameerpet, Hyderabad. The second restaurant, Girlfriend Arabian Mandi Restaurant, is also in Hyderabad.
Many users posted humorous comments on X about this post. One of them wrote, “This can only happen in India.” Another user commented, “Zomato has a chance to step into the field of matrimony as well. Quick Match Wedding.” Another person remarked, “I am excited to know how many people ordered these.”
