Ko Pha Ngan, a beautiful island in Thailand, is known for its famous Full Moon Party, which takes place every month. The party happens at Haad Rin, a popular beach on the island’s southeast side, where thousands gather to celebrate all night long. With lively music and fun vibes, it is a dream destination for many travellers. However, the growing number of partygoers is causing serious harm to the island’s environment.
Grant Barnes, a travel influencer, recently shed light on the hidden consequences of the Full Moon Party, posting a shocking video revealing the damage the event causes to the environment.
“See that beautiful beach behind me?” he asks, showing a pristine beach. “Full of poop,” he adds.
According to Barnes, the island’s sewage system is not equipped to handle the large crowds, especially during the Full Moon celebrations. As a result, tourists have been known to urinate and defecate in the ocean severely affecting the water quality.
The water might appear inviting but Barnes warns against jumping in. “So, a top tip: don’t go into the water during the Full Moon Party,” he advises. Even local media have reported on the filthy condition of the water, calling it “foaming black water.”
“And the problem is, this runoff and sewage discharge changes the quality of the waters around coastal waters, and that results in coral degradation too. So, it is really not a good thing,” he continued.
“So, maybe don’t go into the water, even though it looks really nice. I dunno, I’m really conflicted by it,” Barnes concluded.

The video has garnered over 6 lakh views so far and sparked a range of reactions from social media users.
One user commented, “Don’t go to the full moon party period!! Dumbest thing to do in Thailand.”
Another added, “That beach is wreeecckkeeddd during and after those full moon parties!!!! So sad. And so gross!!!!”
Someone pointed out, “I’ve been in Thailand and most of the beaches were full of rubbish. I was not expecting that much dirt. I hope Thailand improves the quality of the local people’s life and makes the environment more sustainable.”
“Party people only destroying nature, everywhere they go,” a person remarked.
The Full Moon Party started in 1985 at Paradise Bungalows on Koh PhaNgan Island. It was originally a small event to thank 30 travellers. Since then, it has become a massive event that now attracts around 30,000 people. The party takes place on Haad Rin Nok beach and people party until the sun comes up.
