Why supplementary demand for grants, when the government has not spent what it already has: Jadavpur MP Sayani Ghosh in Lok Sabha
Ms Ghosh in her address questioned the rationale of seeking supplementary demand for grants, stating that the government has not been able to spend what it already has. Pointing to the gross final consumption expenditure at 14% (FY 2024), and now down to 4.4% in FY 2025 in the second quarter, she observed, “The government has spent much less this year compared to last year.”
Conveying her concerns about rising inflation, Ms Ghosh pointed to the price of Veg Thali rising to ₹152 from ₹100 alongside those of tomato, potato and other essentials.
“Earlier, the common man would carry money in their pockets and bring home a bag full of vegetables. Whereas now, they are obliged to carry a bag full of cash to bring home vegetables in their pockets,” she remarked in the house. She added that the present dispensation which would express their concerns about inflation during polls, now state that the inflation is an international problem. “Why is the Vishwaguru not able to solve problems,” she stated.
Earlier in her speech, the Jadavpur MP had placed her concerns about high income inequality and middle class spend exceeding their incomes.
