Tsunami Alert For California, Oregon After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake

A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday, prompting a tsunami warning for parts of California and Oregon. However, it was later cancelled. The USGS said, “No significant tsunami waves are expected from this event.”

The warning was issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center for coastal regions between the Douglas/Lane Line in Oregon to Davenport, California. People in the alert area were advised to evacuate right away to higher ground. Significant floods and powerful currents might result from tsunamis, officials said, and the dangers could persist for several hours after the first waves.

The warning stressed that there might be more than one wave and that the initial wave might not be the biggest. Among the estimated tsunami arrival timings were:

Charleston, Oregon: 11:40 a.m. PST
San Francisco, California: 12:10 p.m. PST

Earthquake Details

There is a greater chance of surface-level consequences because the earthquake happened at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers. At 10:44 a.m. PST, the tremor was captured on video. Aftershocks, which might provide more hazards to the impacted regions, are being monitored by the USGS.
