The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi slammed the Central Government on Thursday (July 31, 2025), saying everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman knows that India is a “dead economy”.

The Congress leader’s remark came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian imports and then went on to call India and Russia “dead economies”.

Asked about Mr. Trump’s criticism of the Indian economy, Mr. Gandhi said, “Yes, he is right. Everybody knows that, except the Prime Minister and Finance Minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact”.

“Why are you surprised? The BJP has destroyed the economy. And why have they done it? To help Adani ji,” Mr. Gandhi added.

Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Mr. Gandhi also claimed that a trade deal with the U.S. will happen and Mr. Trump will define it, while Prime Minister Modi will do what the American President tells him to do.

“The External Affairs Minister gives a speech that we have a genius foreign policy. On one hand, the U.S. is abusing you and on the other hand, China is after, and thirdly, when you send delegations across the globe, then no country condemns Pakistan. How are they running the country? They don’t know how to run the country,” Mr. Gandhi said.
