Indian Test captain Shubman Gill etched his name into cricketing history with a record-breaking run in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The 25-year-old became the first player to smash four centuries in his maiden Test series as captain, equalling legends like Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar. His ninth Test century made him the first Indian since Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the feat in Manchester.
Shubman Gill became the first player to hit 4 centuries in a maiden Test series as captain. Five others — Don Bradman, Warwick Armstrong, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli, and Steven Smith — are now joint-second with three each in their debut series as skippers.
Gill became only the ninth Indian cricketer and the first since Sachin Tendulkar in 1990 to score a century at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester.
It was the ninth century in the 25-year-old’s Test career. All of Gill’s centuries have come since the World Test Championship began in 2019. With nine, he’s now equal to his preceding captain Rohit Sharma for the most tons in the competition.
Gill equalled Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar’s record of scoring four centuries in a Test series as captain. No other captain in the 148-year history of Test cricket has scored more than four centuries in a Test series.
Gill now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a Test series for India against England. The 25-year-old broke Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record to take the No. 1 position.
Gill also became the first cricketer from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in England. Before him the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played in England was in the name of Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf.
Shubman Gill became the third Indian cricketer, after Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal, to score 700+ runs in a bilateral Test series. He is overall the fourth cricketer to score more than 700 runs in a Test series played between India and England.
Shubman Gill joined Graham Gooch, Joe Root, and Yashasvi Jaiswal in an elite club after reaching 81 in India’s second innings at Manchester, becoming the fourth batter to score 700+ runs in a Test series between India and England.
