DCU insider reveals “strong contender” for Wonder Woman role

Hollywood insider and reporter Umberto Gonzalez has been delivering the goods with a series of new DCU updates, including who he believes is a “strong contender” for the role of Wonder Woman.

With Superman in cinemas now, all eyes are on the next big cape-wearers in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU: Batman and Wonder Woman.

Of course, there’s plenty of fan casting going down for Bruce Wayne, with speculation about whether Robert Pattinson’s The Batman could (or should) crossover.

As for Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot portrayed the Princess of Themyscira in the former continuity, but now it’s time to usher in a new star.

Adria Arjona is “strong contender” for Wonder Woman

Adria Arjona in Andor

According to Gonzalez, Andor star Adria Arjona is a “strong contender” for the role, not only because she’s friends with Jason Momoa – who’s playing Lobo in Supergirl – but also because she’s an established name in TV.

Appearing on the latest episode of The Box Office Podcast, Gonzalez discussed the DCU’s tactic of opting to rebuild its superhero roster with up-and-comers instead of major, established movie stars.

We saw this with David Corenswet, who was mostly known for his work on TV shows such as The Politician before becoming Superman. “I have a feeling they’re going to build out their IP with brand-new faces,” he says.

Reporter Jeremy Brewster then highlights Milly Alcock as the DCU’s Supergirl, having previously appeared in House of the Dragon and Sirens, and newcomer Tom Rhys Harries as Clayface.

“I do think I would Adria Arjona would be a cool Wonder Woman, but I actually don’t think they’re even going to get her because she’s been in Andor,” Brewster added.

“She could actually… request a Nicholas Hoult salary. I think they’re going to go totally unknown for Wonder Woman.”

However, Gonzalez states, “They do want some TV star or someone on the up that has some visibility, and I still think she might be a strong contender for it given that Jason Momoa is Lobo and they all hang out together.

“And I mean, I could be wrong, but I do think she’s obviously a fan favorite front runner.”

Wonder Woman in DC Comics

This is far from the first time Arjona’s name has been raised, with some already suggesting that she has been cast as Wonder Woman after noticing Gunn now follows her on Instagram.

However, Gunn recently told Extra, “I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman.’”

However, he added: “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way. She was in a movie that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”

In short, nothing has been set in stone yet, but Gonzalez is optimistic we won’t be waiting too long.

“Given the coverage this past weekend, I do feel they’re going to get to Batman much sooner than planned,” he said. “They’ll get to Wonder Woman much sooner than planned and build up to the eventual Justice League.”
