Instagram DMs get a major upgrade with stickers, nicknames, and location sharing

Instagram DMs have become the place for Gen Z to chat, share memes, and plan meetups—right up there with WhatsApp and iMessage. Now, Instagram is taking things up a notch with a bunch of new features designed to make your chats even more fun and functional.

Here’s what’s new:

Stickers

Sometimes, words just don’t cut it. That’s why Instagram is adding 17 new sticker packs and over 300 stickers for your DMs. Whether it’s reacting to a funny reel or sharing how you feel, there’s a sticker for it.

You can even favourite stickers you love — whether it’s one shared by a friend or one you’ve made with cutouts — and reuse them anytime.

Nicknames

Got a bestie with a super long username? Or an inside joke that deserves a permanent spot in your chats? Now you can give your friends (or yourself) nicknames in DMs.

Nicknames stay in your chats only, so your username won’t change for everyone else. Plus, you’re in control — you can decide who can update nicknames, from just you to people you follow.

Here’s how to do it: tap the chat name at the top of your conversation, select “Nicknames,” and choose who gets a new moniker.

Live location sharing

Meeting up IRL? Instagram now lets you share your live location (for up to an hour) or pin a spot on the map to coordinate plans. Perfect for concerts, meetups, or just finding each other in a crowd.

Live Location: Only people in your chat can see it, and it automatically turns off after an hour. A reminder at the top of the chat ensures you don’t forget it’s on.

Privacy First: Your location is private—it can’t be forwarded to other chats.

For now, the location-sharing feature is rolling out in select countries, so keep an eye out!

These updates are all about making DMs more personal, fun, and helpful. Whether you’re sharing a laugh, planning a hangout, or just keeping in touch, Instagram is here to level up your chats.

So go ahead—start nicknaming your besties, sharing your favourite stickers, and planning your next hangout right from your DMs.
