The IMD has upgraded its forecast from yellow to orange for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The IMD said the financial capital will witness an intense spell of rain and moderate thunderstorms with maximum surface wind (speed 41-61 kmph).
An orange alert was issued for Thane and Palghar and red alert for Navi Mumbai till 9 am.
The local trains on the Central and Harbour lines are running 10 minutes late because of poor visibility due to heavy rainfall. Central Railways told CNBC-TV18 that there is no water logging on the tracks as of now.

The IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over west coast (Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra and Goa) during the next seven days with a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala today; coastal and ghat areas of Karnataka till May 27.
The IMD has sounded an Orange Alert for Delhi with a rain and thunderstorms forecast. Parts of the national capital received light showers early in the morning. It has predicted that the maximum temperature could rise to around 35 degrees Celsius, still low for the time of the season.
The weather department said fairly widespread to widespread moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph with heavy rainfall at a few places in the south peninsular region. Very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over Kerala and Mahe from May 27 to 31. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over parts of Karnataka till May 31.
The northeast region is expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread moderate rainfall this week. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 31.
