Chandigarh: After the Chandigarh municipal commissioner on Wednesday had asked all MC departments, mainly the revenue generating ones, to give their suggestions to improve the financial condition of the civic body and also to state their expenditures, multiple wings of the MC held their internal meetings to prepare detailed financial records, to be submitted in the coming week.
As MC has limited resources, it has been found that no major source of revenue has been generated in the recent past.
“Since the committed liabilities in the MC kept increasing in the past, sources of revenue were not increased at that pace. Due to this, the MC has reached the current situation where it is finding it hard to run its functionsthe municipal corporation smoothly. As property tax and charges from water collection are key components of revenue, there is major default in both,” sources said.
As per information, some properties of the municipal corporation are also lying vacant despite various efforts to dispose them off and the authority is taking a second glance at the entire matter in detail and an internal committee in this regard will be constituted that will try to find out the measure, so that MC properties can either be sold out or given on rent on good prices.
“As there are multiple challenges to dispose off the properties and leasehold nature of the properties is the key, the departments concerned are exploring the way again how these vacant properties can be disposed off,” an official said.
Sources in the Chandigarh MC said the municipal commissioner had categorically asked the engineering department not to float any tender without his prior approval and only emergency works would be discussed with him.
“On one side where the municipal corporation is not floating any tender, many contractors are now not showing interest in MC work as their huge payments of the previously done works are still pending due to lack of finances,” an official said
