Aamir Khan cited the limited number of theatres and the impact of OTT platforms on Bollywood films.

Aamir Khan attended the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 on Friday in Mumbai, where he talked about Hindi films not performing well at the box office in recent times. The Bollywood superstar, whose last movie, Laal Singh Chaddha, also tanked, explained that one of the primary reasons for films not earning is the less number of theatres in the country. Aamir argued that there are hardly 10,000 screens in India, which is very less in comparison to countries like the US or China, which are much less populated than us.
“One of the biggest issues that we have faced over the decades is that we do not have enough screens. According to me, that is what we should be investing in. India has huge potential, but it will only be realised when you have those points of sale across the country. If you do not have it, I can’t just watch the film. I can only hear about it,” Aamir said.
Aamir called it a “very unfortunate” situation and added, “We must have a lot more screens. We have a potential for a lot more screens in India.”
The 60-year-old actor further explained that films are not working well at the box office also because of the coming of OTT. He argued that when a film becomes available to the audience of any of the OTT giants in just 45 days of its theatrical release, the chances of people visiting a theatre reduces. “The window is too small between a theatrical and OTT release. You are killing your own business,” he stated.
Aamir explained that when we ask, “Why are films not doing well?”, the OTT aspect is something which must be looked at. “You are telling the audience not to come, that’s why they are not doing well,” he said.
Aamir concluded by saying, “Whether your film is good or bad, this business model doesn’t make sense to me. Irrespective of the quality of a film, that is a separate topic; what is my business model? Currently, it is very faulty.”
