In an incident reminding the world of the Atul Subhash tragedy, an engineer in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah died by suicide after alleging in a self-made video that his wife and in-laws harassed him using threats and false cases against him.

Mohit Yadav, a resident of Auraiya district, also urged people to “throw ashes into the drain” if his soul is not served justice after his death.

Mohit Yadav’s Video

“If I don’t get justice even after my death, throw my ashes into the drain,” he said in the heartbreaking video.

He and his wife Priya were initially in a relationship for seven years before the duo tied the knot in 2023.

On Thursday, Mohit checked into the Jolly Hotel outside the railway station. As he did not go out of his room the next day, the hotel staff grew suspicious and found him hanging in the evening, the police said.

He was a field engineer in a cement firm.

In the video, he said that his wife was pregnant when she got a teaching job in Bihar nearly two months ago, however, her mother made her opt for abortion.

Mohit Yadav’s Allegations Against In-Laws

He further claimed that his mother-in-law kept all her jewellery in her possession. Mohit added that he had sought no dowry during marriage, yet his wife threatened to slap fake cases against him and his family members.

“My wife said that if I didn’t transfer my house and property to her name, she would falsely accuse my family in a dowry case. Her father, Manoj Kumar, filed a fake complaint, and her brother threatened to kill me,” he alleged in the video, adding that his wife started fighting with him on a daily basis and she was backed by her family members to do so.

At the end of the heartbreaking video, the techie apologised to his parents and urged them to throw his ashes into the drain if he is not served justice after his death.

In the video, he also spoke about the lack of laws to protect men from false accusations by women. “By the time you see this video, I’ll no longer be alive. I wouldn’t have taken this step if men had legal protection. I couldn’t bear the harassment from my wife and her family,” he said.

Priya is yet to react to the accusations by her deceased husband.

The incident has intensified calls for a law to protect men from false accusations by women. A series of similar cases — including the suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash last year, who, in a video before dying, alleged that his wife had filed false cases against him — has already raised concerns among men’s rights activists.

Supreme Court Agrees Men Face Harassment In Marriage But Says Can’t Alter Law

On April 15, the Supreme Court admitted that some men and their families may have been falsely implicated by women in dowry cases, but also noted that it cannot become a ground to change the law that is meant to protect women from cruelty.

“Just because of certain instances of misuse of Section 498A of IPC and Section 85 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, can a sweeping statement be made that women are harassing their husbands and in-laws? Nothing can be further from truth,” a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh had said.
